Leadership University

Contact Tiffany Mayse at mayset@nku.edu or 859-572-5806 to register for Leadership University. Registering does not mean that you are obligated to finish the program. You can keep track of your progress and receive attendance updates through NKU Blackboard.

You can earn a Leadership University diploma by completing eight workshops and one community service throughout the year.
You can tailor your experience with a specific theme by selecting a concentration in either Personal Development or Student Leader Certification. To see which workshops qualify for which track, please refer to the back page of this brochure.

All participants must complete at least eight workshops and participate in a minimum of three hours of community service to earn a diploma. Check out the LU website for additional on-campus events that are included in the series, including but not limited to, participation in Diversity Week, International Education Week, Business Week, etc. You may use up to three of these additional events as credits for your diploma.

A list of workshops offered this fall is included in this brochure. Check out the website for updates and look for a spring brochure in late November. Be sure to:

1. Sign the attendance sheet at the workshop
2. Complete the evaluation form at the end of the workshop
3. Check your progress through Blackboard

All participants who complete the LU requirements will receive an invitation to the graduation ceremony. Guests will receive their Leadership University diploma at this event. NKU upper administration and all workshop facilitators will attend your big day! Be sure to check your email in the spring for more details.

2009 Fall Semester Schedule

Introduction to Leadership UniversityLeadership University is an interactive approach to personal and leadership development. This program is designed to meet both new and experienced leaders’ needs. Attend this session to learn how to successfully navigate the program and earn your diploma! Bring your questions and your enthusiasm to this workshop. Here you can earn your first class credit and enjoy FREE ICE CREAM! This is also an opportunity to learn how to get involved in the over 200 student organizations that make up NKU Campus Life. This is an open session so feel free to stop in anytime. Please join us and take the first step in your leadership journey at NKU!

Privilege in America - Between Barack and a Hard Place

Special Guest Tim WiseTim Wise is one of the most respected anti-racist writers, activists, and educators in the U.S. He is the author of four books. His latest book, Between a Barack and a Hard Place: Racism and White Denial in the Age of Obama, is the first book since President Barack Obama's election that critically examines what his success means or does not mean for race relations in our society.

During this session students will think about their dreams and how they can achieve them along with overcoming the obstacles that might stand in their way. Come prepared to have movie snacks and bring your copy of Thirteen Women Strong for an opportunity to have it signed by the author Robert Wallace.

Marketing and the Media

Chris Cole, University CommunicationsIn this session you will learn how to market student organization events to the campus and into the surrounding community. You will learn about the resources that the university has to help you reach your audience and have a successful event. This session will teach you how to write effective press releases and how to effectively use technology to promote events. This workshop will also give tips on ways to properly deal with the media in times of crisis.

Building the Team

Nancy Winstel, NKU Women’s Head Basketball CoachIn 25 years as head coach at NKU, Nancy Winstel has seen the Lady Norse compile a 548-184 record, make 18 NCAA Tournament appearances, be nationally ranked in 17 seasons, win or share nine Great Lakes Valley Conference championships and advance to the NCAA Division II Final Four in 1987, 1999, 2000, 2003 and 2008. Etiquette Diner- Don’t Fork Up!

This is a great way to help you get ready for the real world and formal business events. The program will include a three course meal and teach you the basics of etiquette. This function is a causal event. There is a $5 fee to attend and you must pre-register a week before the event.

Game of Life

Presented by the Northern Kentucky Leadership InstituteEver wanted to know what it would be like in someone else’s shoes for a day? The Game Of Life is designed to show the overt and covert influences of power and privilege is in our society. In the "game" students will see how society views gender, race, socio-economic status, and other dimensions of diversity. This powerful activity will help you see new and different perspectives. This session will be offered twice on:

Milk

Milk begins on Harvey Milk's 40th birthday, when he was living in New York City and had not yet settled in San Francisco. It chronicles his foray into city politics, and the various battles he waged in the Castro neighborhood as well as throughout the city, and political campaigns to limit the rights of gay people in 1977 and 1978 run by Anita Bryant and John Briggs. His romantic and political relationships are also addressed, as is his tenuous affiliation with troubled Supervisor Dan White; the film ends with White's double murder of Milk and Mayor George Moscone. Open discussion will follow the screening.

Preparing for Graduate School

Resume Writing

Identify the skills you have gained during your collegiate experience and learn how to best market them to future employers. If you have a resume, please bring a copy!

Let’s Talk About IT!

Kelly Addington and Becca Tieder are experts on sexual assault awareness and prevention as well as sexual empowerment. While in college at the University of West Florida, these two lifelong friends endured a personal experience with sexual assault that forever changed their lives and sent them on a journey to uncover true sexual empowerment. The duo have served as consultants for Dateline NBC and were guests on a recent Dateline episode titled, "Stranger Danger", an exposé on the dangers of sexual assault and date rape drugs. They have also been featured on CNN, The Morning Show with Mike and Juliet, NBC, ABC, CBS, Fox and NPR.

Leading from YOUR Strengths

Brian Combs, Baptist Campus MinistryBased on the work of Marcus Buckingham, this session will allow participants to identify their best strengths. This awareness will allow participants to adjust their life around your specific strengths. Three core beliefs will be examined in this session: 1. You were born different from everyone else. 2. You are the best teacher about what makes you different. 3. You must learn this to perform better to achieve your greatest personal success.

1. Can I attend more than eight workshops? There is no limit on how many you can attend!
2. Can I participate in more community service events? Yes! Please check with the Student Life Volunteer Coordinator, Rebekah James, to learn about more opportunities.
3. Can I attend workshops even if I don’t plan to complete the program?  All workshops are open to everyone, even if you are unable to complete all eight workshops for the diploma.
